Ingredients

  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup pepperoni slices
  • 0.25 cup sliced black olives
  • 0.5 cup green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour (for dusting)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2

On a lightly floured surface, divide the pizza dough into 4 equal portions and roll each into a circle about 8 inches in diameter.

Step 3

Spread 2 tablespoons of marinara sauce onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a 1-inch border.

Step 4

Evenly distribute the mozzarella cheese, pepperoni slices, black olives, and diced green bell pepper over the marinara sauce.

Step 5

In a small bowl, beat the egg with the tablespoon of water to create an egg wash.

Step 6

Brush the edges of the dough lightly with the egg wash to help seal the calzones.

Step 7

Fold the uncovered half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together firmly, then crimp them with a fork for a tight seal.

Step 8

Transfer the calzones to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with olive oil to help them brown beautifully.

Step 9

With a sharp knife, make 2 small slits on the top of each calzone to allow steam to escape during baking.

Step 10

Bake the calzones in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.

Step 11

Remove the calzones from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving with additional marinara sauce for dipping.
