Ingredients

  • 8 pieces chicken drumsticks
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup sour cream
  • 0.25 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 small garlic clove (minced)
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt (for dip)
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper (for dip)

Directions

Step 1

Place the chicken drumsticks in a large bowl. Add the buttermilk, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Toss to coat the drumsticks evenly. Cover the bowl and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight.

Step 2

In two separate bowls, place the all-purpose flour in one and the panko breadcrumbs in the other.

Step 3

Remove the drumsticks from the marinade, letting the excess drip off. Roll each drumstick in the flour until evenly coated, then press it into the breadcrumbs to create a crisp outer layer. Repeat for all drumsticks.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Step 5

Carefully add the drumsticks to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Transfer to a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 6

To make the chive dip, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped fresh chives, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper in a small mixing bowl. Stir until smooth and well combined.

Step 7

Serve the crispy drummies warm with the chive dip on the side.
