Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Warm water
  • 0.5 cup Plain yogurt
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (melted, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water and sprinkle in the active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture.

Step 3

Pour the yeast mixture, yogurt, milk, and olive oil into the well. Mix the wet and dry ingredients together until a sticky dough forms.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and cover with a towel to prevent them from drying out.

Step 7

Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat until very hot.

Step 8

On a floured surface, roll out one dough ball into an oval or teardrop shape, about 1/4-inch thick.

Step 9

Place the rolled-out dough onto the hot skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom has brown spots. Flip the naan and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.

Step 10

Remove the naan from the skillet and immediately brush it with melted butter. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.

Step 11

Serve warm with your favorite curry or dip, or enjoy on its own!
