Ingredients

  • 2 large yams
  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 cup Cointreau (orange liqueur)
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.33 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Peel the yams and sweet potatoes, then cut them into 1-inch cubes.

Step 3

Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add a pinch of salt, and cook the yam and sweet potato cubes for 10–15 minutes until just fork-tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 4

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Step 5

Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and orange zest to the butter, stirring until well combined and slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Stir in the Cointreau, mixing gently to combine into the sauce.

Step 7

In a large greased baking dish, spread the cooked yams and sweet potatoes evenly.

Step 8

Pour the butter and Cointreau mixture over the yams and sweet potatoes, tossing lightly to coat all pieces.

Step 9

If using pecans, sprinkle them evenly over the top of the dish.

Step 10

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 11

If using marshmallows, remove the foil after 30 minutes, sprinkle the marshmallows over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 10–15 minutes until the marshmallows are golden and bubbly.

Step 12

Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
