Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.75 cup Light brown sugar (for caramel sauce)
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 0.25 cup Heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup Pecans (optional)
  • 0.5 cup Light brown sugar (for filling)
  • 1 tablespoon Ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter (softened, for filling)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat milk and 3 tablespoons of the melted butter until warm (about 110°F). Add this mixture to the dry ingredients, followed by the egg. Mix until combined.

Step 3

Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 6–8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, make the caramel sauce: In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Stir in 3/4 cup brown sugar and heavy cream. Cook, stirring frequently, for 2–3 minutes until smooth. Pour the caramel sauce into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. If desired, sprinkle pecans over the sauce.

Step 6

In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Step 7

Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a 12x18-inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter (3 tablespoons) over the dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly on top.

Step 8

Starting from the long side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 even slices.

Step 9

Place the rolls cut-side down in the prepared baking dish, on top of the caramel sauce layer. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 11

Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and let cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Carefully invert the baking dish onto a large serving plate or tray to let the caramel topping coat the rolls.

Step 13

Serve warm and enjoy!
