Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup additional powdered sugar (for coating)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 4

Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing on low speed until combined.

Step 5

Stir in the chopped nuts with a spatula until well distributed throughout the dough.

Step 6

Divide the dough into two equal portions. Leave one portion plain, and mix the cocoa powder into the other portion until it’s evenly incorporated.

Step 7

Take a small piece of plain dough (about 1 tablespoon) and a small piece of chocolate dough (about 1 tablespoon), roll each into a short rope, and twist them together gently. Roll the twisted dough into a ball.

Step 8

Repeat this process with the remaining dough, placing each ball onto the prepared baking sheet with about 1 inch of space between them.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 13-15 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. The cookies will still be soft but will firm up as they cool.

Step 10

Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool slightly for about 5 minutes.

Step 11

While the cookies are still warm, roll them in powdered sugar until they are generously coated. Place them on a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 12

Once completely cool, roll the cookies in powdered sugar again for a thicker, snowy coating.

Step 13

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Enjoy your Twisted Snowballs with a cup of tea or coffee!
