Ingredients

  • 200 grams Sponge cake (vanilla or plain)
  • 50 grams Instant custard powder
  • 500 ml Milk
  • 3 tablespoons Sugar (for custard)
  • 250 grams Mixed fruits (chopped, such as bananas, apples, grapes, and strawberries)
  • 1 packet Fruit jelly (any flavor of your choice)
  • 200 ml Boiling water (for jelly)
  • 100 ml Cold water (for jelly)
  • 150 ml Whipping cream (optional)
  • 50 grams Tutti frutti (candied fruits)
  • 20 grams Chopped nuts (optional, such as almonds or pistachios)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare the fruit jelly as per the packet instructions: dissolve the jelly crystals in 200 ml of boiling water, stir until completely dissolved, then add 100 ml of cold water. Pour the mixture into a shallow dish and refrigerate to set (approximately 1-2 hours).

Step 2

In a mixing bowl, prepare the custard by combining the custard powder and sugar with a few tablespoons of milk to make a smooth paste. Heat the remaining milk in a saucepan until warm, then gradually add the custard paste while stirring continuously. Cook over medium heat until the custard thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.

Step 3

Cube the sponge cake into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.

Step 4

Chop the mixed fruits into small, uniform pieces. Ensure the fruits are fresh and dry (avoid overly juicy fruits to prevent the trifle from becoming soggy).

Step 5

Once the jelly has set, cut it into small cubes.

Step 6

If using whipping cream, whip it to soft peaks and set aside for layering or decoration.

Step 7

In a large glass bowl or individual serving glasses, start assembling the trifle: layer the bottom with half of the cubed sponge cake. Follow with a layer of custard, spreading it evenly over the cake.

Step 8

Top the custard with a layer of mixed fruits and jelly cubes. Repeat the layers with the remaining sponge cake, custard, fruits, and jelly cubes.

Step 9

Finish with a swirled topping of whipped cream (optional), and sprinkle tutti frutti and chopped nuts on top for garnish.

Step 10

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve chilled and enjoy!
