Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 1 can canned tuna
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 sheets nori sheets
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water several times until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

Step 2

Combine the rice and 2.5 cups of water in a rice cooker. Cook according to your rice cooker's instructions. This usually takes about 20 minutes.

Step 3

While the rice cooks, prepare the tuna filling. Drain the canned tuna and place it in a mixing bowl.

Step 4

Add the mayonnaise and soy sauce to the tuna, mixing well until fully combined. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Step 5

When the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and let it cool slightly.

Step 6

Mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the warm rice using a rice paddle or spatula.

Step 7

To form the onigiri, wet your hands with a little water and sprinkle them with salt to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Take a handful of rice and form it into a small ball or triangle. Create an indentation in the center and place about a teaspoon of tuna filling inside. Cover the filling completely with more rice, pressing gently to shape it.

Step 9

Cut the nori sheets into strips. Wrap a strip of nori around the base or side of each rice ball.

Step 10

Serve immediately or wrap in plastic wrap to enjoy later.
