Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons or bags black tea leaves or tea bags
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger (sliced or grated)
  • 1 stick cinnamon stick
  • 3 pods green cardamom pods (crushed lightly)
  • 2 pieces whole cloves
  • 4 pieces black peppercorns
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized saucepan, add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil over medium heat.

Step 2

Once the water begins to boil, add the sliced or grated ginger, cinnamon stick, crushed cardamom pods, whole cloves, and black peppercorns. Stir gently and let the spices simmer for 2–3 minutes to release their flavors.

Step 3

Lower the heat to medium and add the black tea leaves (or tea bags) to the saucepan. Let it steep for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

Pour in 1 cup of whole milk and add 2 tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste). Stir well.

Step 5

Allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil. Keep stirring to prevent the milk from scalding or overflowing.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low and simmer the chai for another 2–3 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine.

Step 7

If desired, add a pinch of ground nutmeg for extra warmth and aroma.

Step 8

Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the chai tea using a fine mesh sieve into cups or a teapot.

Step 9

Serve immediately while hot and enjoy your traditional chai tea with your favorite snacks or biscuits.
