In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
In a small saucepan, warm the milk and butter over low heat until the butter is melted. Let it cool slightly until it is warm but not hot to the touch.
Beat the egg in a small bowl, then add it to the milk mixture. Stir to combine.
Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
