Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large, chopped onion
  • 4 cloves, minced garlic
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground pork
  • 28 ounce can canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 0.5 cup red wine
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 piece bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (or to taste) salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon (or to taste) black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped fresh parsley

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef and ground pork. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 4

Drain any excess fat from the pot.

Step 5

Pour in the red wine to deglaze the pot, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.

Step 6

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, bay leaf, sugar, salt, and black pepper.

Step 7

Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.

Step 8

Cover the pot and let the sauce simmer gently for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Step 9

Remove the bay leaf and taste for seasoning, adjusting salt and pepper if necessary.

Step 10

Stir in the chopped fresh parsley just before serving.

Step 11

Serve the sauce over cooked pasta or use as a filling for lasagna.
