Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese slice
  • 4 burger buns
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 8 tomato slices
  • 4 slices pickles
  • 4 tbsp ketchup
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 2

Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions (about 4 ounces each). Gently shape each portion into a patty about 3/4-inch thick, making a slight indent in the center with your thumb to prevent puffing up during cooking.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add vegetable oil. Swirl to coat the surface.

Step 4

Place the burger patties onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on the first side without pressing down on the patties. Flip and cook for an additional 3 minutes on the second side (or to your desired doneness).

Step 5

During the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty. Cover the skillet loosely with a lid to allow the cheese to melt.

Step 6

While the patties are cooking, slice the burger buns in half and spread the unsalted butter on the cut sides. Toast the buns on a separate skillet or under a broiler until golden brown.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by spreading 1 tablespoon each of ketchup and mayonnaise on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with lettuce, a cooked burger patty with melted cheese, 2 tomato slices, 1 pickle slice, and the top half of the bun.

Step 8

Serve immediately and enjoy your perfectly crafted burger.
