Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns
  • 4 slices Monterey Jack cheese slices
  • 1 large avocado
  • 1 medium lime
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 0.5 cup salsa (store-bought or homemade)
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 0.25 cup jalapeño slices (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties, about 3/4 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Drizzle olive oil to coat the cooking surface.

Step 4

Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Monterey Jack cheese on each patty to melt.

Step 5

While the burgers cook, slice the avocado and mash it in a small bowl with the juice of one lime and chopped cilantro (if using). Season to taste with a pinch of salt.

Step 6

Toast the hamburger buns lightly in the skillet or grill pan if desired.

Step 7

To assemble, spread the mashed avocado onto the bottom half of each bun. Add a lettuce leaf, a cooked burger patty, and a generous spoonful of salsa. Top with jalapeño slices if desired.

Step 8

Cover with the top half of the bun and serve immediately with your favorite side dishes, such as fries or a salad.
