Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 mix)
  • 2 cups Green cabbage
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 4 slices Cheddar cheese slices
  • 4 Burger buns
  • 4 tbsp Mayonnaise (optional)
  • 4 tsp Mustard (optional)
  • 4 slices Pickles (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter and allow it to melt.

Step 2

Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until softened.

Step 3

Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet with the onions. Stir to combine and cook for 5-7 minutes until the cabbage is tender.

Step 4

Season the cabbage mixture with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir to distribute the seasonings evenly. Remove the mixture from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5

In a large bowl, divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape them into burger patties. Press your thumb into the center of each patty to create a small indentation (this helps them cook evenly).

Step 6

Heat the same skillet (or a grill) over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for 3-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness.

Step 7

In the last minute of cooking the patties, place one slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty and allow it to melt.

Step 8

Toast the burger buns lightly on the skillet or grill for 1-2 minutes, cut sides down.

Step 9

To assemble the burgers, spread mayonnaise and mustard (if using) on the bottom half of each bun. Add the cooked burger patty with melted cheese, followed by a generous portion of the cabbage and onion mixture.

Step 10

Top with pickles (if using) and place the top half of the bun on the burger. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious Runza Burgers!
