Ingredients

  • 500 grams Potatoes
  • 300 grams Green cabbage
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 50 grams Butter
  • 100 grams Cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 50 milliliters Whole milk

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 2

Peel and chop the potatoes into even-sized chunks. Place them in a pot of salted water, bring to a boil, and cook for about 15-20 minutes or until tender.

Step 3

While the potatoes are cooking, thinly slice the onion and shred the cabbage.

Step 4

In a skillet, melt 25 grams of butter over medium heat. Sauté the onions until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Add the cabbage to the skillet with the onions and sauté for another 5-7 minutes, until the cabbage is tender but still slightly crisp. Set aside.

Step 6

Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the remaining butter along with the milk, and mash the potatoes until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 7

Fold the sautéed cabbage and onions into the mashed potatoes, mixing well to combine.

Step 8

Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 9

Grate the Cheddar cheese and sprinkle it generously over the top of the potato mixture.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Step 12

Serve hot as a side dish alongside roasted meats or as a standalone vegetarian main course.
