Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples (preferably tart, such as Granny Smith)
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 150 grams unsalted butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 200 grams all-purpose flour
  • 10 grams baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line a 9-inch (23 cm) baking dish with parchment paper.

Step 2

Peel, core, and finely grate the apples. Place the grated apples in a bowl and mix them with 50 grams of granulated sugar and the ground cinnamon. Set aside to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 3

In a mixing bowl, cream together the remaining 150 grams of granulated sugar and unsalted butter until light and fluffy using an electric mixer.

Step 4

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, folding gently until a smooth batter forms.

Step 6

Spread half of the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish using a spatula.

Step 7

Evenly distribute the grated apple mixture over the batter layer.

Step 8

Spread the remaining batter carefully over the apple layer, smoothing the surface.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 11

Dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.
