Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 0.5 cups Milk
  • 1 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil (for frying)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.

Step 2

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and milk together.

Step 3

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for 1-2 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness.

Step 6

Cut the rolled-out dough into rectangular strips approximately 4 inches long by 1.5 inches wide. Optional: Make a small slit in the center of each strip and pull one end of the dough through the slit to create a twist.

Step 7

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the correct temperature.

Step 8

Carefully drop a few pieces of dough into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

Step 9

Using a slotted spoon, remove the Rollkuchen from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Step 10

Repeat with the remaining dough, ensuring the oil temperature remains steady.

Step 11

Serve warm or at room temperature, preferably with fresh watermelon slices for a classic pairing.
