Ingredients

  • 3 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Water
  • 0 as desired Food coloring (optional)
  • 0 as desired Flavored extract (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Prepare skewers for growing the sugar crystals. Dip wooden skewers or clean string into water, then roll in granulated sugar to coat. Let them dry completely on a piece of wax paper. This helps the crystals grow.

Step 2

Heat the water in a medium saucepan over medium heat until it begins to simmer.

Step 3

Gradually add the sugar to the water, stirring constantly to dissolve. Continue adding sugar until no more will dissolve (this is called a supersaturated solution).

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly, about 10 minutes.

Step 5

If desired, add food coloring and flavored extracts to the sugar solution to customize your rock candy.

Step 6

Pour the mixture into clean, heat-safe glass jars. Make sure the jars are tall enough to allow room for the skewers or strings to be suspended without touching the bottom.

Step 7

Attach a clothespin to the top of each skewer or string and suspend them in the jars, ensuring they don’t touch the bottom or sides of the jars.

Step 8

Cover the jars loosely with plastic wrap or paper towels to keep dust out, and place them in a warm, undisturbed location.

Step 9

Allow the crystals to grow over the course of 5 to 7 days. Check them periodically to monitor growth.

Step 10

Once the crystals have grown to your desired size, carefully remove the skewers or strings from the jars and let them dry on a piece of wax paper or a cooling rack.

Step 11

Store the finished rock candy in an airtight container or package them as gifts.
