Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely diced
  • 1 celery stalk, finely diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground pork
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 0.5 cup red wine
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and garlic, sauté until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the diced carrot and celery, cook for another 5 minutes until vegetables are softened.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and ground pork to the pan. Cook, stirring frequently, until the meat is browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine.

Step 6

Add the oregano, basil, bay leaf, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan partially, and let the sauce simmer for 60-90 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Remove the bay leaf. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.

Step 9

Stir in the chopped fresh parsley just before serving.

Step 10

Serve over cooked pasta, or use as desired.
