Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 large tomato, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 200 milliliters water
  • 100 grams frozen peas (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened and golden.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for another minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink.

Step 5

Mix in the turmeric, cumin, coriander, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Stir well to coat the beef in the spices.

Step 6

Stir in the chopped tomato and tomato paste, cooking for 2–3 minutes until the tomato softens.

Step 7

Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop.

Step 8

If using peas, stir them in during the last 5 minutes of cooking.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Stir in the fresh lemon juice for a burst of brightness.

Step 10

Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice, naan, or flatbread.
