Ingredients

  • 200 grams Granulated sugar
  • 60 ml Hot water
  • 400 grams Sweetened condensed milk
  • 375 ml Evaporated milk
  • 250 ml Whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon Instant coffee powder
  • 6 pieces Large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Prepare a large roasting pan for a water bath by filling it halfway with hot water. Place it on the oven's middle rack.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, combine 150 grams of granulated sugar and 60 ml of hot water. Cook while stirring until the sugar dissolves. Then let it simmer without stirring until it turns into a deep amber caramel (about 8–10 minutes).

Step 3

Carefully pour the caramel into the bottom of a 9-inch round flan mold or oven-safe dish. Swirl the dish to coat the base evenly, and set it aside to cool.

Step 4

In a blender or mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk. Stir in the instant coffee powder and whisk until dissolved completely.

Step 5

Add the eggs, orange zest, vanilla extract, and the remaining 50 grams of granulated sugar to the milk mixture. Blend or whisk thoroughly until smooth.

Step 6

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into the prepared caramel-coated dish. This will ensure a smooth texture by removing any zest particles or bubbles.

Step 7

Place the flan dish into the prepared water bath (roasting pan). Cover the flan dish tightly with aluminum foil to prevent the top from browning.

Step 8

Bake for about 60 minutes or until the flan is just set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center when shaken.

Step 9

Carefully remove the flan dish from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate it for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to fully set.

Step 10

To serve, run a thin knife around the edges of the flan. Place a large serving plate over the dish and invert the flan onto the plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the top.

Step 11

Slice and enjoy your Orange Coffee Flan!
