Ingredients

  • 14 oz Extra firm tofu
  • 0.5 cup Cornstarch
  • 0.25 cup Neutral cooking oil (e.g., canola or vegetable oil)
  • 0.5 cup Orange juice (freshly squeezed preferred)
  • 3 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp Orange zest
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 2 tbsp Water (to mix with cornstarch for sauce)
  • 2 stalks Green onions, sliced (optional for garnish)
  • 1 tsp Sesame seeds (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Press the tofu: Remove the tofu from its package and place it between two plates. Place a heavy object (like a can or pot) on top of the plates to press out excess water. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then pat the tofu dry with a clean towel.

Step 2

Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.

Step 3

In a shallow bowl, add 1/2 cup of cornstarch. Toss the tofu cubes in the cornstarch until they are evenly coated. Shake off any excess.

Step 4

Heat the neutral cooking oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add the tofu cubes in a single layer. Fry them for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are golden and crispy. Remove the tofu and set it aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 5

In a small bowl, mix together the orange juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, and orange zest to create the sauce base.

Step 6

In another small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to make a slurry. This will help thicken the sauce.

Step 7

In the same skillet or wok, reduce the heat to medium and pour in the orange sauce mixture. Bring it to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 8

Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the sauce while stirring continuously. Continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to a glossy consistency.

Step 9

Add the fried tofu back into the skillet and toss it in the sauce until all the pieces are evenly coated.

Step 10

Serve the Orange Chicken Style Tofu hot, garnished with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Pair with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
