Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 large green bell pepper
  • 2 small garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 slices crusty bread (sourdough or Italian loaf)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

Directions

Step 1

1. Prepare the vegetables: Thinly slice the onion and green bell pepper. Mince the garlic cloves and set aside.

Step 2

2. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper, and sauté for 7–8 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Remove the veggies from the pan and set aside.

Step 3

3. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and ground black pepper. Mix gently until evenly combined, and then form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.

Step 4

4. Heat another tablespoon of olive oil in the same skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the hamburger patties for 3–4 minutes per side, or until fully cooked and browned. Turn off the heat and set the patties aside.

Step 5

5. Preheat your oven to broil. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.

Step 6

6. While the oven heats, lightly butter one side of each slice of crusty bread. Place the bread, buttered side down, onto the prepared baking sheet.

Step 7

7. Place a cooked hamburger patty on each slice of bread. Top each patty with a portion of the sautéed onions and bell peppers, and finish with a slice of provolone cheese.

Step 8

8. Place the baking sheet under the broiler and broil for 1–2 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly. Watch closely to avoid burning.

Step 9

9. Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Enjoy your Open Faced Hamburger Phillies with your favorite side dishes!
