Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20)
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz Mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined.

Step 2

Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty that is about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside. Do not clean the skillet; the brown bits on the bottom will add flavor to the gravy.

Step 4

Reduce heat to medium, then add the sliced onion to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and lightly golden.

Step 5

Add the mushrooms to the skillet and cook for another 3-4 minutes until tender.

Step 6

Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms. Stir well to coat the vegetables evenly, then cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.

Step 7

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it thicken, about 3 minutes.

Step 8

Stir in the butter to add richness to the gravy. Add the browned beef patties back to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over each patty.

Step 9

Cover the skillet and let the patties simmer in the gravy for 10 minutes, ensuring they are cooked through and flavorful.

Step 10

Serve the Onion Salisbury Steaks hot, smothered in gravy, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Pair with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
