Ingredients

  • 500 grams green beans
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 3 large garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.125 teaspoons red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

Step 1

Wash and trim the green beans by snipping off the stem ends.

Step 2

Peel and thinly slice the onion into half-moons.

Step 3

Finely mince the garlic cloves and set them aside.

Step 4

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat.

Step 5

Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently, until soft and caramelized.

Step 6

Push the onions to one side of the skillet and melt the butter in the cleared space.

Step 7

Add the minced garlic to the melted butter and sauté for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously, until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.

Step 8

Toss the green beans into the skillet and mix everything together so the beans are coated in the onion and garlic mixture.

Step 9

Add the salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) to the skillet. Stir to combine.

Step 10

Pour in 2 tablespoons of water and cover the skillet with a lid. Let the green beans steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender but still slightly crisp.

Step 11

Remove the lid and cook for an additional 2 minutes to evaporate any remaining liquid, stirring often.

Step 12

Taste and adjust seasoning, if needed. Remove from heat and serve warm as a side dish.
