Ingredients

  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cups Warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 0.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cups Whole milk
  • 0.25 cups Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 whole Large egg
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Butter, for brushing (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast, warm water, and 1 teaspoon of the granulated sugar. Stir to dissolve the yeast and let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, warm the milk over low heat until lukewarm (do not boil). Remove from heat and stir in the melted butter and the remaining granulated sugar. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg until beaten. Slowly add the milk and butter mixture to the egg while whisking continuously to prevent the egg from scrambling.

Step 4

Add the frothy yeast mixture to the bowl and gently stir to combine.

Step 5

Gradually add the flour and salt to the wet mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour one tablespoon at a time until it starts to come together.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky but not sticky.

Step 7

Place the dough in a large greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 8

Punch the dough down to release the air, then divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place the balls onto a greased or parchment-lined 9x13-inch baking dish, spacing them evenly.

Step 9

Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until they’ve doubled in size.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Step 12

If desired, brush the tops of the baked rolls with melted butter for a shiny finish.

Step 13

Allow the rolls to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!
