Ingredients

  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cups Warm water (110°F)
  • 0.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cups Whole milk
  • 0.25 cups Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter (for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water. Sprinkle in a pinch of sugar (from the 1/4 cup) and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling. Remove from heat and add the unsalted butter, stirring until melted. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, remaining sugar, milk-butter mixture, and salt. Mix well.

Step 4

Beat in the egg until fully incorporated.

Step 5

Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or stand mixer with a dough hook attachment until a soft dough forms that pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Step 6

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 7

Place the dough in a large, greased mixing bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free area for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 8

Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a smooth ball.

Step 9

Place the dough balls into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish or on a greased baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Cover with a towel and let rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a glossy, flavorful finish.

Step 13

Serve warm or at room temperature. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
