Ingredients

  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 0.5 cups salsa verde
  • 0.5 cups queso fresco, crumbled
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 0.5 cups sour cream
  • 0.25 cups chopped onion
  • 0.25 cups fresh cilantro leaves

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina and salt.

Step 2

Gradually add the warm water to the masa harina, stirring until a smooth, pliable dough forms. If necessary, adjust the water quantity to achieve the right consistency.

Step 3

Divide the dough into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten into an oval shape about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 4

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil.

Step 5

Cook the huaraches one at a time for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 6

Evenly spread a layer of refried beans over each cooked huarache.

Step 7

Top the beans with salsa verde, queso fresco, shredded lettuce, a dollop of sour cream, chopped onion, and cilantro leaves.

Step 8

Serve immediately while warm, and enjoy your nut-free huaraches!
