Ingredients

  • 1 pound Dried yellow split peas
  • 1 piece Smoked ham bone or salted pork
  • 10 cups Water
  • 3 medium Carrots
  • 1 small Turnip (or rutabaga)
  • 2 medium Potatoes
  • 2 stalks Celery stalks
  • 1 large Onion
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dried savory (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the dried yellow split peas under cold water to remove any dust or debris, and set them aside.

Step 2

In a large stockpot, combine the peas, smoked ham bone or salted pork, and 10 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 3

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface.

Step 4

While the peas cook, peel and dice the carrots, turnip, and potatoes into small cubes. Chop the celery stalks and onion into small pieces.

Step 5

After 60 minutes of cooking the peas, add the diced vegetables (carrots, turnip, potatoes, celery, and onion) to the pot. Stir well to combine.

Step 6

Season the soup with salt, black pepper, and dried savory (if using). Continue to simmer for another 60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and the peas have broken down into a creamy consistency.

Step 7

If desired, carefully remove and shred any meat from the smoked ham bone or salted pork and return it to the soup. Discard the bone.

Step 8

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot, optionally topped with scrunchions or alongside freshly baked bread.
