Ingredients

  • 3 cups Whole milk
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 large Egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 4 medium Bananas (ripe, but firm)
  • 40 pieces Vanilla wafer cookies
  • 1 cup Whipped cream (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt.

Step 2

Slowly add the milk to the saucepan while whisking to ensure the dry ingredients dissolve without lumps.

Step 3

Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture is thickened and begins to bubble (about 5–7 minutes).

Step 4

In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Gradually add about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the yolks to temper them, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.

Step 5

Pour the tempered egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture. Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens further.

Step 6

Remove the saucepan from heat, then stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully incorporated.

Step 7

Allow the custard to cool for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent a skin from forming.

Step 8

While the custard is cooling, peel and slice the bananas into coins.

Step 9

In a 9x9-inch baking dish or individual serving dishes, layer the vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and custard. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of custard on top.

Step 10

Cover the dish with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.

Step 11

Before serving, optionally top with whipped cream and a few extra vanilla wafers or banana slices for garnish.
