Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined but do not overwork the meat.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into an oval patty about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium and add the remaining olive oil and the butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the sliced mushrooms and onions. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are softened and the mushrooms have released most of their moisture.

Step 5

Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom and onion mixture and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

Step 6

Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer. Allow the gravy to thicken, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 7

Return the beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the mushroom gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the beef is cooked through and the flavors are well combined.

Step 8

Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Step 9

Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, topped with mushroom gravy, and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Pair with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
