Ingredients

  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup Applesauce (unsweetened preferred)
  • 0.25 cup Vegetable oil
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8x8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the granulated sugar, applesauce, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and fully incorporated.

Step 4

Gradually add the dry ingredients from the medium bowl to the wet ingredients in the large bowl, stirring gently with a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 5

If using chocolate chips, fold them into the batter for extra chocolatey goodness.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 22-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into 9 squares.

Step 9

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
