Ingredients

  • 400 grams black beans (canned, drained and rinsed)
  • 60 grams bread crumbs
  • 0.5 whole red onion (finely diced)
  • 1 whole bell pepper (finely diced)
  • 75 grams corn kernels (fresh, frozen, or canned)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 whole egg (optional, for binding)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 whole burger buns
  • 0 to taste optional toppings (lettuce, tomato slices, avocado, sour cream, salsa, etc.)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some texture remaining.

Step 2

Add the bread crumbs, diced red onion, diced bell pepper, corn kernels, cumin powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, fresh cilantro, lime juice, and the egg (if using). Mix well until the mixture holds together when pressed. If the mix feels too dry, add a splash of water or additional lime juice.

Step 3

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1-inch thick. Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to help them firm up.

Step 4

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties (working in batches if necessary) and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.

Step 5

Lightly toast the burger buns in the same skillet or in a toaster for extra flavor and texture.

Step 6

Assemble the burgers by placing each patty on a bun and topping with your choice of optional toppings, such as lettuce, tomato slices, avocado, sour cream, or salsa.

Step 7

Serve immediately with a side of tortilla chips, a fresh salad, or your favorite dipping sauce.
