Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 0.25 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 28 ounces canned whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 0.25 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 0.25 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Add the olive oil and warm it for about 1 minute.

Step 2

Add the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes to the pan. Sauté for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant but not browned.

Step 3

Add the canned whole peeled tomatoes, including their juices, to the pan. Use a wooden spoon or potato masher to break the tomatoes into smaller chunks.

Step 4

Stir in the kosher salt and dried oregano. Lower the heat to simmer and cook uncovered for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil and freshly ground black pepper.

Step 6

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve warm over pasta, use as a pizza sauce, or store in the refrigerator for later use.
