Ingredients

  • 150 g unsalted butter
  • 150 g plain flour
  • 50 g brown sugar
  • 400 g sweetened condensed milk
  • 150 ml maple syrup
  • 50 g unsalted butter (for caramel filling)
  • 200 g dark chocolate
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a 20cm x 20cm (8-inch x 8-inch) square baking tin with parchment paper.

Step 2

To prepare the biscuit base: Melt 150g unsalted butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. In a mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, 150g plain flour, and 50g brown sugar. Stir until well mixed and crumbly.

Step 3

Press the biscuit mixture evenly into the base of the prepared tin. Use the back of a spoon or your fingers to smooth the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until slightly golden and firm to touch. Set aside to cool slightly.

Step 4

To make the maple caramel filling: In a medium saucepan, combine 400g sweetened condensed milk, 150ml maple syrup, and 50g unsalted butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and turns a light golden color—this should take about 10-12 minutes.

Step 5

Carefully pour the caramel filling over the cooled biscuit base, spreading it out evenly. Return the tin to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely to room temperature.

Step 6

To prepare the chocolate topping: Melt 200g dark chocolate with 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water or in the microwave in short bursts, stirring until smooth.

Step 7

Pour the melted chocolate over the cooled caramel layer, spreading it out evenly with a spatula. Tap the tin gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles.

Step 8

Refrigerate the slice for at least 2 hours, or until the chocolate topping is fully set.

Step 9

Once set, remove the slice from the tin using the parchment paper and cut into 16 squares or rectangles using a sharp knife (run the knife under hot water and dry it for cleaner cuts).

Step 10

Serve chilled or at room temperature and enjoy your delicious Maple Caramel Slice!
