Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 1 tbsp Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 tsp Active dry yeast
  • 5 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 pcs Large eggs
  • 1 cup Brown sugar
  • 2.5 tbsp Ground cinnamon
  • 5 tbsp Unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar
  • 4 oz Cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tbsp Unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp Whole milk (for frosting)

Directions

Step 1

Warm the milk in a small saucepan or microwave until lukewarm (about 110°F). Transfer to a large mixing bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon of sugar and the yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2

Melt 5 tablespoons of butter and let it cool slightly. Add the melted butter, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir well.

Step 3

Gradually add the remaining 2 cups of flour and knead the dough on a floured surface (or with a dough hook in a stand mixer) for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Step 4

Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5

While the dough rises, prepare the filling by combining 1 cup of brown sugar and 2.5 tablespoons of ground cinnamon in a small bowl.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle (approximately 16x12 inches). Spread 5 tablespoons of softened butter evenly over the surface.

Step 7

Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough. Starting from a long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log and pinch the seam to seal.

Step 8

Cut the log into 12 equal pieces. Place the rolls into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, cut side up, spacing them slightly apart. Cover with a clean towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes, until puffy.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cinnamon rolls for 22-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Do not overbake as they should be soft.

Step 10

To prepare the frosting, mix the 4 oz of softened cream cheese, 3 tablespoons of softened butter, 2 cups of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons of milk in a bowl. Beat until smooth and creamy.

Step 11

Spread the frosting generously over the warm cinnamon rolls. Serve warm and enjoy the mall-style goodness!
