Ingredients

  • 300 grams Elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 3 cups Whole milk
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1

Cook the elbow macaroni in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk constantly for 2-3 minutes to form a roux.

Step 3

Gradually add the milk and heavy cream, whisking to combine. Continue to cook and stir over medium heat until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, gruyere cheese, garlic powder, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 5

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated.

Step 6

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Transfer the mac and cheese mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 7

In a small bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the mac and cheese.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crispy.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly for 5 minutes before serving.
