Ingredients

  • 12 oz elbow macaroni
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for 4–5 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1–2 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

Step 5

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, breaking up the meat with a spatula as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.

Step 6

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Mix well, reduce the heat, and let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 7

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni, meat sauce, 1 cup of cheddar cheese, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Stir until evenly combined.

Step 8

Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 9

Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and mozzarella cheeses on top of the casserole.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy!
