Bite into the bold, savory flavors of Jamaican Beef Patties, a Caribbean classic that’s perfect as an appetizer, snack, or main dish. These golden pockets of flaky, turmeric-spiced pastry encase a rich, aromatic filling of seasoned ground beef, enhanced with fragrant allspice, thyme, and a touch of heat from optional Scotch bonnet peppers. The dough, made with buttery goodness and a hint of curry, bakes to crisp perfection, while the beef filling is thickened with breadcrumbs and simmered to lock in its juicy flavor. Simple enough to make in your own kitchen, these patties are a delicious fusion of vibrant spices and hearty textures. Ideal for parties, meal prep, or authentic comfort food, these Jamaican Beef Patties will transport your taste buds straight to the tropics!
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, curry powder, turmeric, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Cut the cold unsalted butter into small cubes and add to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Slowly add the cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, while mixing. Knead the dough gently until it comes together. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces with a spoon. Drain off excess fat and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the onion, garlic, scallions, and scotch bonnet pepper (if using). Cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
Add the thyme, allspice, paprika, and remaining salt and black pepper. Stir and cook for 1 minute.
Return the ground beef to the skillet and mix well. Add the breadcrumbs and beef stock or water. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens and most of the liquid is absorbed. Allow it to cool slightly.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a bowl or round cutter (about 6 inches in diameter) to cut out circles.
Place 2-3 tablespoons of the beef filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together and seal by crimping with a fork.
Brush the tops of the patties with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm!
