Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce (light)
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce (dark)
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine (Shaoxing wine)
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 1 tablespoon Brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger (grated)
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons Water
  • 1 serving Cornstarch slurry (1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water)

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the hoisin sauce, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, Chinese rice wine, honey, and brown sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 2

Add the five-spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, and sesame oil to the saucepan. Stir to combine and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 3

Pour in the water and stir to incorporate, allowing the sauce to simmer gently for about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the cornstarch slurry to the saucepan and stir well. Continue simmering the sauce for another 1-2 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.

Step 5

Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool completely before using. The sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Step 6

Use the Hong Kong BBQ Sauce to marinate meats, brush over roasted meats as a glaze, or enjoy as a dipping sauce.
