Ingredients

  • 500 grams large prawns (shrimp), peeled and deveined
  • 100 grams cornstarch
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 500 ml vegetable oil, for frying
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 2 stalks scallions (green onions), chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, toasted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled and deveined prawns with salt and black pepper. Mix well and set aside for 5 minutes to marinate slightly.

Step 2

Prepare the batter by whisking the egg whites in a bowl. Place the cornstarch in another bowl. Dip each prawn into the egg whites, then coat it evenly with cornstarch. Shake off any excess cornstarch and set the prawns aside on a plate.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (around 180°C or 350°F), fry the prawns in small batches for 2-3 minutes or until they turn golden and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat with the remaining prawns.

Step 4

In a separate skillet over medium heat, add the sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the honey, soy sauce, and rice vinegar to the skillet. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for 1-2 minutes until it thickens slightly.

Step 6

Add the fried prawns to the skillet and toss them gently to coat evenly in the honey sauce.

Step 7

Transfer the honeyed prawns to a serving plate. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped scallions for garnish.

Step 8

Serve warm with steamed rice or as a standalone appetizer. Enjoy!
