Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 4 slices American cheese slices
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 1 piece tomato, sliced
  • 1 piece red onion, sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 slices pickles (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 2

Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty roughly 1/2-inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up while cooking.

Step 3

In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, Dijon mustard, and yellow mustard. Set aside.

Step 4

Heat a grill or stovetop skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates or pan with olive oil.

Step 5

Place the burger patties on the hot grill or skillet. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for well-done burgers.

Step 6

Brush each patty with the honey mustard sauce during the last 2 minutes of cooking on the second side. Add a slice of American cheese on top of each patty and cover with a lid briefly to melt the cheese.

Step 7

Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill or in a skillet until golden brown.

Step 8

Assemble the burgers: Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a patty with melted cheese. Add tomato slices, red onion slices, and pickles (if using). Drizzle additional honey mustard sauce on the top half of the bun.

Step 9

Close the burgers with the top bun and serve immediately with your favorite side dishes, such as fries or a crisp salad.
