Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.5 cups honey
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 0.25 cup powdered sugar (for optional dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.

Step 2

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set the dry ingredients aside.

Step 3

In a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4

Reduce the mixer speed to medium and slowly beat in the honey until well combined.

Step 5

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 6

With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter in three additions, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined; do not overmix.

Step 7

Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips using a spatula.

Step 8

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Step 10

Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then use the parchment overhang to lift the cake onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 11

Once cooled, dust the top of the cake lightly with powdered sugar if desired. Slice into squares and serve.
