Ingredients

  • 500 grams Beef chuck, diced
  • 30 grams All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 large Onion, chopped
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 500 milliliters Beef stock
  • 125 milliliters Red wine
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme, dried
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 sheet Ready-made puff pastry
  • 1 Egg, beaten

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 160°C (320°F).

Step 2

Place the beef chunks in a bowl, add the flour, salt, and black pepper, and toss to coat the meat evenly.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a large ovenproof casserole dish over medium-high heat. Add the beef in batches and sear until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.

Step 4

In the same casserole dish, add onions and carrots, sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for another minute.

Step 5

Return the beef to the pot, add the beef stock, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaf. Stir everything to combine.

Step 6

Cover the dish, transfer it to the preheated oven, and cook for 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the beef is tender.

Step 7

Remove the casserole dish from the oven and let the filling cool slightly. Discard the bay leaf.

Step 8

Increase the oven temperature to 200°C (400°F).

Step 9

Transfer the steak filling into a pie dish. Roll the puff pastry over the dish, trimming the edges to fit. Press the pastry edges to seal them to the dish.

Step 10

Brush the pastry with beaten egg to give it a golden finish.

Step 11

Place the pie in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Step 12

Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade steak pie!
