Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup whey protein powder
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.25 cup sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups canola oil
  • 1 cup greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a saucepan, heat the milk, sugar, butter, and salt over medium heat until the butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and let it cool to lukewarm.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, whey protein powder, yeast mixture, cooled milk mixture, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.

Step 4

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 6-8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter to cut out donuts and a smaller cutter for holes if desired.

Step 7

Place the cut donuts on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for about 30 minutes.

Step 8

Heat canola oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts, a few at a time, for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Step 9

For the cream filling, in a medium bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, honey, and vanilla bean paste until smooth.

Step 10

Transfer the cream filling to a pastry bag fitted with a small tip, and gently pipe the filling into the cooled donuts.

Step 11

Serve immediately for best freshness and enjoy your high protein treat!
