Ingredients

  • 500 g pearl onions
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 120 ml water

Directions

Step 1

Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Add the pearl onions and blanch for 2 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water. Peel the onions by snipping off the root ends and squeezing gently to remove the skins.

Step 2

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the peeled onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are lightly golden and starting to become tender.

Step 3

Sprinkle the brown sugar over the onions and stir to coat evenly. Add the balsamic vinegar and mix well.

Step 4

Pour in the water, then sprinkle the thyme leaves, salt, and black pepper over the onions. Stir to combine.

Step 5

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and the liquid has thickened into a glossy glaze.

Step 6

Remove the lid and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the glaze to thicken further if needed.

Step 7

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the chopped parsley. Adjust seasoning if necessary.

Step 8

Serve the herbed glazed onions warm as a side dish or accompaniment to roasted meats or vegetables.
