Ingredients

  • 3 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups Warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons Molasses
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (melted)
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil or extra butter (for greasing)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.

Step 2

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbles form on the surface.

Step 3

Add the molasses, melted butter, and milk to the yeast mixture. Stir until everything is fully combined.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the bowl of dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon or use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment until a sticky dough forms.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use the stand mixer to knead the dough for 6-8 minutes on medium speed.

Step 6

Lightly grease a large bowl with vegetable oil or extra butter. Place the dough into the bowl, then cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free environment for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it back to your floured surface and shape it into a loaf or place it into a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan, seam-side down.

Step 8

Cover the dough again and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes until it has risen slightly over the edge of the loaf pan.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 10

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
