Ingredients

  • 250 grams Whole wheat flour
  • 7 grams Active dry yeast
  • 300 milliliters Warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 teaspoons Vanilla extract (optional)
  • 500 milliliters Vegetable oil (for frying, heart-healthy such as canola or olive)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, and cinnamon (if using). Stir to mix well.

Step 2

In another bowl, mix the warm water, honey, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast is activated and frothy.

Step 3

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the yeast mixture. Using a spatula or your hand, mix until you achieve a smooth and slightly sticky dough. If using, add the vanilla extract during this step.

Step 4

Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and leave the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot or deep fryer to approximately 350°F (175°C).

Step 6

Use well-oiled hands or an ice cream scoop to take small portions of the dough and gently drop them into the hot oil. Be careful not to overcrowd the pot.

Step 7

Fry the puff-puff in batches, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown all over, about 3-4 minutes per batch.

Step 8

Use a slotted spoon to remove the puff-puff from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Step 9

Serve warm as a delightful snack, plain or with your favorite dip or sauce.
