Ingredients

  • 1 pound Lean ground turkey
  • 4 pieces Whole wheat burger buns
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 0.5 cup Red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 pieces Garlic cloves, minced
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 cup Spinach leaves
  • 1 large Tomato, sliced
  • 1 large Avocado, sliced
  • 4 slices Reduced-fat cheddar cheese slices

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the lean ground turkey, chopped red onion, minced garlic, ground black pepper, salt, and Dijon mustard. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 2

Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty approximately 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the turkey patties to the skillet.

Step 4

Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and patties are cooked through.

Step 5

During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of reduced-fat cheddar cheese on top of each patty. Cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt.

Step 6

While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the whole wheat burger buns either in a toaster or on a grill pan until warm and crispy.

Step 7

To assemble the burgers, place a handful of spinach leaves on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top the spinach with a cooked turkey patty.

Step 8

Layer with tomato slices, avocado slices, and cover with the top half of the bun.

Step 9

Serve immediately while warm, and enjoy a heart-healthy, nutritious meal!
