Ingredients

  • 300 grams Whole wheat flour
  • 7 grams Instant yeast
  • 100 grams Low-fat cheddar cheese, grated
  • 250 milliliters Unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Honey
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, instant yeast, and salt. Stir until evenly mixed.

Step 2

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the almond milk, honey, and olive oil. Heat until lukewarm, about 35-40°C (95-104°F). Make sure the mixture is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.

Step 3

Pour the lukewarm liquid mixture into the dry ingredients, gradually integrating them while stirring with a wooden spoon.

Step 4

Knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Fold in the grated low-fat cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.

Step 6

Cover the mixing bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).

Step 8

Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release excess air, then divide it into 8 equal pieces.

Step 9

Shape each piece into a bun. Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring enough space between them to rise.

Step 10

Cover the buns with a damp kitchen towel and let them rise again for another 20 minutes.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the buns are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 12

Allow the buns to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving.
